Heat record: the warmest month of May since there are records

As had been suspected, this month of May has ended up being the hottest in Spain since there are records, specifically since 1961. In view of the meteorological data, it is confirmed that both the average maximum temperatures and the monthly average are the highest since data was collected. Until now, the previous record for the warmest May was held by the year 2020.

Meteored’s director of meteorology, José Antonio Maldonado, has anticipated that May 2022 has exceeded the average temperature of the reference period by almost 3ºC, that covers between the years 1981 and 2010, when that month presented an average temperature of 16.6ºC.

As for the average minimum temperatures, in this case the month of May ranks second in the series of historical records, since the average minimum of 2020 was slightly higher than this year.

Contrary to what has happened with the rest of the spring, May has been quite drywhich has caused the reservoirs to have dropped compared to the levels of the same period of the previous year.

June will also be hotter than normal

The month of June begins with rainfall in various parts of the Peninsula (until Sunday), especially in Galicia and Asturias, but also in the northwest of Castilla y León, Extremadura and, in isolation, in Huelva and the Canary Islands. The temperatures, however, will be normal for the season in these coming days. In the Ebro valley, however, there will be areas that exceed 35ºC.

In the second week of the month, very little rainfall is expected in almost all of Spain, if not null. Only on the Cantabrian coast could it discharge some rain.

As to the temperatures, will be slightly above the normal values in Galicia, the Cantabrian regions, the Mediterranean coast, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands, and clearly above the normal values for the time in the rest of Spain. Therefore, a June marked by a very hot environment is expected.
